The news that Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are closing in on a deal for Relebohile Mofokeng from Orlando Pirates should be a welcome one for South African fans for several reasons.

Most supporters will be in agreement that Mofokeng needs to move to Europe to further his career, or he will reach a certain level in the Premier Soccer League and stop progressing.

At 21, he probably should be there already, but better late than never, and he would move on the back of a good showing at the World Cup and an excellent season in the PSL, in which he played a major role in Pirates winning a first league title in 14 years.

There have been comments that he should be moving to a top-five European league, but that would be a mistake, and we only need to look at the lessons of Percy Tau’s switch to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018 for that.

The key thing is that Belgium is a starting point, not where he would necessarily end up, and a chance to bed himself into Europe at a top club in that league who will be playing continental football this season.

Tau joined Brighton and quickly found out that the Premier League is a different beast.

Opportunities to play were hard to come by and he had a succession of loans, all in Belgium, where he excelled.

The league suits South African players and the environments are highly professional.

Tau was at the self-same Union when they were in the second tier and was a star, before stints with Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

He eventually cut his losses in the Premier League and moved to Al Ahly to join Pitso Mosimane three seasons later, but his time in Belgium improved him as a player.

Mofokeng can go there and spend a season or two building his reputation and track record in a league that is watched closely by scouts from across the continent.

If you shine in Belgium and fit the profile, you will be picked up by a bigger team.

To go to Spain or England now and sit on the bench or in the stands is a career-killer, the kind that sees a player end up in Morocco, Libya or Egypt after a few seasons.

Lyle Foster is another example of a player who used Belgium as a stepping stone, moving from Westerlo to then Premier League Burnley in 2023.

Numerous other South Africans have played in Belgium and done well down the years, so the track record is there.

Union are a historic club and were league winners in 2025/26. They have Chris O’Loughlin as their sporting director, once an assistant at Pirates and someone who grew up in South Africa.

That helps in terms of Mofokeng and the club understanding one another.

It just seems like the right fit for Mofokeng at this stage of his career and a great place to mature and grow as a footballer, opening up the potential for bigger things in the future.
