Mofokeng, 21, has long been linked with a move away from the Betway Premiership and it appears as though he will head to Europe, with a deal between the clubs said to be close, bar a few loose ends.
Mofokeng was arguably the player of the season in South Africa in the 2025/26 campaign, guiding Pirates to the league title with his goals and assists.
He plays as a winger for Pirates, but has been used more as a ‘number 10’ playmaker with Bafana Bafana, as coach Hugo Broos does not see him as a wide player.
Mofokeng has played 125 times for Pirates since making his debut late in the 2022-23 season, scoring 29 goals and providing 31 assists.
That is a goal contribution almost every other game, and last season that accelerated to 11 goals and nine assists in 36 games.
He would not be the first player to feature for Union. Percy Tau had a spell there on loan in the 2018-19 season, while they have a sporting director with South African links in former Pirates assistant coach Chris O’Loughlin.
Union won the Belgian league in the 2024-25 season and claimed the Belgian Cup this season.
