Where will Mamelodi Sundowns use their new signing from the Austrian league?

The signing of Antonio van Wyk adds to the attacking options for Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso and could well signal an exit from Chloorkop for a couple of players, including the Premier Soccer League’s record goalscorer.

Van Wyk has been signed from Austrian outfit SV Ried, where he enjoyed a strong couple of seasons after his arrival from Stellenbosch FC in September 2024.

He made 53 appearances (35 starts) and scored four goals as an attacking midfielder or winger, but he grew up as more of a forward, making it intriguing as to where Sundowns will use him.

The possible exit of Portuguese midfielder Miguel Reisinho means he could be a straight replacement for him, but Sundowns are also stalling on a new contract for striker Peter Shalulile.

Should the latter be released, it is entirely possible Van Wyk could be thrust into a more advanced position, where many who saw him in his early days at Stellenbosch believed he would end up.

Tsiki Ntsabeleng is scheduled to return to his Major League Soccer side FC Dallas. There had been whispers that Sundowns may want to keep him beyond his loan spell, but the arrival of Van Wyk likely shuts that door.

But there is also the possibility that Cardoso sees Van Wyk as a right-sided winger or attacker, where Sundowns do not have a lot of options.

In fact, the only pure right-sided forward in their squad at present is Kutlwano Lethlaku, which is why the 20-year-old started both legs of the CAF Champions League final against AS FAR.

It is perhaps not the most natural position for Van Wyk, but one he has played in before.

He spent a lot of his time at Ried on the left wing, but that is a position Tashreeq Matthews made his own last season. Van Wyk could have been brought in to provide competition though and keep the latter on his toes.

Monnapule Saleng and Siyabonga Mabena are other options there.

Up front, before we know who comes and goes, it is hard to see Van Wyk getting a look in immediately with Brayan Leon, Iqraam Rayners, Lebo Mothiba and possibly Shalulile, if he stays, all likely ahead in the pecking order.

Sundowns recently signed a new contract with Themba Zwane, but perhaps Van Wyk is being viewed as his long-term successor in a position behind the strikers.

Until we hear from the coach it is all conjecture, but Sundowns have managed to capture another exciting young South African talent who adds versatility to their squad.
