The injury came in the first period of their 3-2 overtime win after Hughes saw just over two minutes of ice time on three shifts, eventually leaving with a trainer almost nine minutes into the game.
New Jersey has three games left before the league goes into a month-long break for the Winter Olympics, with Team USA's first matchup set for February 12th against Latvia.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe said that Hughes will be undergoing testing and imaging, but "the sense is it's not anything serious. We just have to make sure and that’s what he’s doing right now."
Hughes has been susceptible to injuries throughout his career, missing 103 of a possible 506. He already missed 18 games earlier this season due to a hand injury.
The 24-year-old has 12 goals and 24 assists through 36 games this season. Since 2021, Hughes has posted at least 26+ goals and 50+ assists every season, setting career-highs during the 2022-2023 season with 43 goals and 99 assists.
In 62 games last season, Hughes posted 27 goals and 43 assists through 63 games, also recording one assist in Team USA's four games during the widely popular 4 Nations Face-Off.
