Sunday will be a historic day for Spanish tennis, as a hard-court Masters tournament features an all-Spanish final for the first time in history. This milestone was secured in Shanghai by this season's sensation, Rafael Jodar, and the in-form Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Both players will be battling for the most prestigious trophy of their careers.

Match news and form

Davidovich Fokina has looked like a new man on this Asian swing. The mental fragility in big moments that held him back in the past has given way to greater composure, and that is exactly the change his career needed.

In Shanghai, he has come through the kind of crunch moments that once ended his runs, winning deciding-set tiebreaks against Frances Tiafoe and Hubert Hurkacz.

In the semi-finals, he showed that resilience again, recovering from a set down to beat top seed and soon-to-be world number one Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and book his place in the final.

With Daniil Medvedev knocked out in the other semi-final, Davidovich Fokina now stands out as the best performer of this year's Asian swing. Shanghai marks his second final of the swing, after he claimed the second ATP title of his career in Chengdu last month.

He has now won nine of his 10 matches in Asia, a rich vein of form that is making up for so much time lost to injury this year. It will lift him back into the top 20 next week, with a new career-high ranking awaiting if he wins the title on Sunday.

Rafael Jodar's phenomenal Shanghai debut rolls on. After four consecutive three-set battles, each time recovering from a set down, he was expected to be physically vulnerable in the semi-finals.

He did suffer a physical scare, needing a medical timeout, but refused to let it derail him. Instead, he produced a hugely impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over former Shanghai champion and seasoned campaigner Medvedev.

In the process, he registered his 20th Masters win in just 26 matches. That is a mighty impressive feat, considering his compatriot and former world number one Carlos Alcaraz needed 28 matches to reach the same mark.

Jodar has plenty at stake on Sunday beyond playing the biggest final of his career. Victory would also bring his top-10 debut, setting a new record for the fewest days between a top-100 and top-10 debut, a mark held by Boris Becker since 1985.

It would also give his ATP Finals hopes a major boost. Currently eighth in the race, he would leapfrog Arthur Fils, Tiafoe, and Medvedev to move up to fifth with the title.

Betting analysis

Both players have been physically battered in Shanghai after plenty of three-set battles, making recovery a big factor. Whoever holds up better in terms of endurance could gain the upper hand in an otherwise even contest between two similarly ranked players.

With both chasing a maiden Masters title, the pressure will be immense on each side. If either can be relied on to handle the nerves and deliver on the big stage, though, it is Jodar, and on that basis he starts as the slight favourite.
