Bafana Bafana know they will meet the Czech Republic in their second game at the 2026 World Cup in Atlanta on June 18 and here is a quick guide to their opponents for fans.

The European side qualified for the finals after edging Denmark 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in their final qualifier this week, returning to the global showpiece for the first time since 2006.

So what sort of challenge will they pose?

The Czechs’ preferred formation is 3-4-2-1, but coach Miroslav Koubek has at times switched to a 3-5-2 with two classic centre-forwards. When the opposition has the ball, they quickly revert to a 5-4-1.

The Czech team do not look to keep possession, build up patiently and produce intricate link-up play. On the contrary, they had one of the highest direct speeds of all teams in the European qualifiers. The same applies to their pressing sequences.

That means they get the ball from back to front quickly, often using long balls, which is the opposite of how Bafana try to play. So it will be a clash of styles.

They have a lot of players who are physically strong in duels, aerial battles and pressing. They also put a large number of crosses into the box. In the qualifiers, the Czechs scored the most goals from set-pieces of any European team, with 11, which accounted for 50 per cent of all the goals they scored.

That will be a huge red flag for Bafana coach Hugo Broos, whose side are not the best at defending balls in the air and tend to concede too easily from them.

The better news is that the Czechs are not great against opponents who keep possession and have players who excel in one-on-one situations, which might allow the likes of Oswin Appollis or Tshepang Moremi to really have a go at them.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick is their leading forward, while the likes of West Ham midfielder Tomáš Souček and Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Ladislav Krejčí will be familiar to fans who watch the Premier League.

But, like Bafana, the majority of their players are home-based, at Slavia Prague, Viktoria Plzeň and other clubs.

The Czechs’ 74-year-old coach, Koubek, is older than Broos, so in a way this will be a battle of the ‘old guard’.

They are ranked 43rd in world football, above South Africa, who are 60th in the FIFA standings.

The two countries have met once before, at the Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia in late 1997, when they drew 2-2. Brendan Augustine and Helman Mkhalele both scored for Bafana, who twice came from behind to draw.

Bafana play in the opening match of the World Cup against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on June 11, while their final group game is against South Korea in Monterrey on June 24.
