The headlines

Despite being eliminated from the tournament, Turkey rallied for their final game of the World Cup, beating co-hosts USA 3-2, thanks to a 98th-minute winner from Kaan Ayhan

Momentum has been lost for the Americans, who were looking to win three straight at a World Cup for the first time ever, but they still topped Group D with six points. It should be said that the USA made nine changes to their starting lineup as they look ahead to a round-of-32 tie with Bosnia & Herzegovina on Wednesday.

In the other game of that group, Australia and Paraguay played out a goalless draw in Santa Clara. This meant that both sides progressed into the knockout rounds.

Elsewhere, the Netherlands saw off a poor Tunisia side 3-1 to top Group F. Japan and Sweden finished 1-1, meaning both sides qualified for the round of 32.

In the early games, Ecuador saved themselves from early elimination thanks to a comeback 2-1 win over Germany. Gonzalo Plata stabbed home from a corner in the 77th minute to see the South Americans through with four points from their three games.

In the other game in Group E, Curacao - the World Cup's smallest nation - bowed out of the competition after losing 2-0 to the Ivory Coast, who also qualified for the knockouts.

FIFA World Cup 2026

Goal of the day

Heading back to the Ecuador game for Thursday's goal of the day and a peach from Nilson Angulo.

Despite being a goal behind and their World Cup hanging by a thread, the Sunderland forward picked the ball up just outside the area to fire in from distance.

It helped his team back into the game before Plata's winner, which saw his coach, Sebastian Beccacece, leap into the stands to celebrate with his loved ones.

Player of the day

The Dutch side headed into their match with Tunisia knowing a win would see them top their group, which normally requires your leaders to step up and be counted for.

In the 3-1 win, Virgil van Dijk did just that.

He recorded a 9.0 with Flashscore's new-and-improved player ratings system, and the assist for Brian Brobbey's second goal was a big part of that. Granted, it seemed like a lucky diversion as Van Dijk headed back across goal, but he put it in the right area for Brobbey to apply the finish.

At 34, the Liverpool defender could be heading towards the twilight of his career; however, today's performance showed just how important he is to his national team.

He won 90% of his duels against Tunisia, whilst gaining a game-high eight clearances. His pass completion rate was 95%, showing across all parameters of the game, he was on song in the Netherlands' final group game.

Best from social media

Football fans showing up across other sports is nothing new at this World Cup, but the golf was not something we expected across June and July.

Norwegian fans showed up at the Travellers Championship near Boston to support their compatriots, Viktor Hovland and Kristoffer Reitan, even performing the now infamous 'Viking row' in the process.
