The Estadio Azteca will once again provide the stage for a high-stakes chapter in world football history when England and Mexico meet in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The English side return to a venue that evokes one of the most painful episodes in their history. It was there, on June 22nd, 1986, that they were eliminated by Argentina in a match defined by Diego Armando Maradona.
On that day, more than 114,000 spectators witnessed a contest laden with symbolism just four years after the Falklands War.
Maradona opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a handball goal that, despite the controversy, was allowed to stand and later became known as the 'Hand of God'.
Just four minutes later, the Argentine produced the iconic 'Goal of the Century', running over 60 metres and beating several opponents before finishing past Peter Shilton.
Gary Lineker pulled one back in the 81st minute, but the 2-1 scoreline sealed England’s elimination. That defeat left a deep mark on English football and elevated Maradona to legendary status.
Almost four decades later, England return to the Azteca with a new generation led by Harry Kane. Thomas Tuchel’s side now face a different challenge, albeit one inevitably shaped by the weight of history.

England manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that the clash with Mexico will be "one of the most beautiful and exciting" matches of the tournament. He also warned about the difficulties posed by Mexico City’s altitude, which stands at 2,240 metres above sea level.
"It will be simply impossible to fully adapt, but we are prepared," the German coach stated. Mexico, meanwhile, arrive buoyed by their status as co-hosts and by the backing of a fanbase that turns the Azteca into an intimidating environment.
The Mexican side are unbeaten in World Cup matches at this stadium and, in the current edition, have scored eight goals while yet to concede.
The energy of their supporters, who have staged mass celebrations across the capital, adds an extra layer of pressure. Moreover, the match will mark the final fixture of the 2026 World Cup to be played on Mexican soil.
