Bologna struck late to boost their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season, netting a 90th-minute winner in a narrow 1-0 Serie A victory over relegation-threatened SC Pisa, who are still without a win since November.

It took some time for the game to get going, with only one shot attempted by the time the first half had reached its midway point.

However, the match suddenly sparked into life after 24 minutes played when Santiago Castro wasted a glorious opportunity for the visitors. The Argentinian striker managed to outmuscle his marker and found himself with just the goalkeeper to beat, but he ballooned his effort over the bar to the dismay of the away supporters.

From that moment, the Rossoblù began to play with more fluidity, and this almost led to them taking the lead 10 minutes before the interval.

Castro was in the thick of the action once more, latching onto a smart through ball from Nikola Moro, but his eventual shot from inside the box struck the woodwork to the hosts’ relief.

Pisa’s lack of threat in the final third before half time came as no surprise, considering the Nerazzurri had only scored a miserly four goals from their previous 13 home games in the league heading into this match.

The opening stages of the second half were a stale, scrappy affair, yet the hosts finally created a big opportunity just after the hour mark when a close-range header from Stefano Moreo forced a vital save from Łukasz Skorupski to keep his side on level terms.

With time quickly running out, Skorupski was needed again to brilliantly tip substitute Gabriele Piccinini’s strike around the post, as the hosts continued to show more urgency.

However, the Nerazzurri fans’ hearts were broken when, out of nowhere, Jens Odgaard smashed the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out to win the game at the death for the Rossoblù.

Pisa’s hopes of avoiding relegation to Serie B are beginning to look very remote indeed, recording just one league victory with 11 games to go. Meanwhile, Bologna have now registered five successive victories in all competitions and have risen to eighth in the table as a result.
