Arsenal vs Liverpool has long been a classic fixture, and Thursday night's edition is likely to be another fine example of the best that English football has to offer.

It will be the first-ever Premier League game between the clubs to be played on a Thursday, with their last league meeting on this day of the week coming at Anfield way back in December 1947.

Liverpool looking for eighth league double

Somewhat ominously for the North Londoners, the Reds have won four of their last five Premier League away games on a Thursday, with the only exception being a 4-0 defeat by Manchester City in July 2020.

Furthermore, against no team have Arsenal lost more Premier League games than they have against Liverpool (26, level with Man Utd), with the visitors looking to complete an EPL double over Arsenal for the eighth time, and first since 2021/22. Their seven doubles are already the most any side has against the Gunners in the competition.

It's a first plays fourth scenario, with the pair being split by Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom are on 43 points, five behind Mikel Arteta's side after being held to draws on Wednesday night.

However, the Spaniard will undoubtedly be drumming into his players that it doesn't matter what anyone else does as long as Arsenal keep winning.

Szoboszlai to equal Mane?

The last game between the two sides saw Liverpool inflict Arsenal's first Premier League defeat of the season, a 1-0 win at Anfield thanks to a glorious Dominic Szoboszlai free-kick in the second half.

The Hungarian had also assisted in the previous fixture in May 2025, and if he were to score or assist again in this match, he'd become the first Liverpool player to be involved in three consecutive Premier League goals against Arsenal since Sadio Mane in March 2017 (two goals, one assist).

Slot's men are unbeaten in the last three league head-to-heads dating back to February 2024 too, and the North Londoners therefore have a score to settle. What better time to do so?

Both teams in form

The hosts will be hoping to secure a sixth straight victory, whilst Liverpool are unbeaten in six, so both teams come into this top-of-the-table clash in good form.

The trio of Leandro Trossard, Viktor Gyokeres, and Declan Rice have all provided standout moments for Arsenal this season, with the former two being the team's joint top scorers with five goals, followed by Rice with four.

There may not be too much of a reliance on that trio, mind you.

That's because Bukayo Saka has scored in each of his last three home league games against the Reds; though in their entire league history, no Arsenal player has ever scored in four consecutive home games against Liverpool.

The hosts' opposite wide man, Gabriel Martinelli, has been directly involved in six goals (four goals, two assists) in his last seven top-flight encounters with Liverpool, and against no other team does he have more goals and assists in the competition (also six against Crystal Palace).

Liverpool's most prolific player has been Hugo Ekitike, who has netted on eight occasions, including three match-opening goals, and is tied for fourth in the league's scoring charts in 2025/2026.

However, the striker has yet to return to training with his club after a hamstring issue, and may therefore not be considered for this match.

Gakpo loves London

Given the likelihood of Cody Gakpo starting as a result, the Dutchman will be keen to add to his three away league goals this season, all of which have come in his last four league appearances in London (Chelsea, West Ham United and Fulham).

Were he to find the net again, Gakpo would be the second Liverpool player to score in four different away matches in the capital in a Premier League season after Mo Salah (twice, in 2017/18 and 2020/21).

He and his colleagues have certainly made things exciting for the neutral this season, too, given that only Burnley's Premier League matches this season have seen more goals in the 90th minute or later (10) than Liverpool's (nine – five for, four against).

2023-24 (13), 2008-09 (12), and 2010-11 (10) are the only seasons that have seen more Reds 90th-minute goals for and against in an EPL campaign.

No goalless draws since 2015

Arsenal have conceded in each of their last 20 Premier League games against Liverpool since the 0-0 draw in August 2015.

Against Manchester United (30 between 1953 and 1968) and Tottenham Hotspur (24 between 1955 and 1967) are the only longer runs without a clean sheet that the North Londoners have had in their league history.

In 10 Premier League matches at home this season, Arsenal are unbeaten with nine wins and one draw. Liverpool have four wins, two draws, and four losses on the road, and they haven't been beaten in a league away game since November against Manchester City.

The hosts have also won their last seven EPL matches at the Emirates Stadium, and only once under Arteta have they had a longer winning run at home, when earning 10 consecutively between April and December 2022.

What a game we have in prospect.
