Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died along with his brother Andre Silva, also a footballer, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria, Spain, after being involved in a car accident.

According to multiple reports, Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, 28, died last night in a tragic car accident in the province of Zamora, Spain.

The accident occurred on the A-52 motorway, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria. Jota was travelling with his brother Andre Silva, 25 years old and a player at second-tier side Penafiel, when the car they were in veered off the road and caught fire.

Witnesses at the scene immediately alerted the emergency services by calling 112. According to their testimonies, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.

Evidence at the scene of the crash suggests Jota's car suffered a burst tyre while overtaking, Spanish police said in a statement.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the Premier League champions said in a statement.

"The club have been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre."

The Portuguese Football Federation also expressed their condolences: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, this morning, in Spain.

Tributes pour in for Diogo Jota from across the world

Jota, who got married on June 28th and had three children, joined Liverpool in 2020 after excelling for fellow Premier League club Wolves and was part of last season's Premier League-winning squad.

He began his career in Spain with Atletico Madrid, having a loan spell with Porto before joining Wolves and helping them earn promotion from the Championship.

Jota represented Portugal 49 times, scoring 14 goals. Most recently, he was part of the side that won the UEFA Nations League finals, coming on as an extra-time substitute in the decider against Spain.
