Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur shared the spoils in an attritional goalless draw, leaving the Bees still waiting for a first home head-to-head Premier League (PL) win after five attempts (D4, L1).

Thomas Frank could be forgiven for having a degree of trepidation upon his return to the Gtech Stadium, facing a Bees side that have embraced home comforts in recent weeks.

With six home wins from nine PL home games heading into this clash, Keith Andrews’ side thought they were on their way to victory number seven when Kevin Schade prodded home from close range, until the effort was ruled out for offside.

What followed turned into somewhat of a slugfest, with Brentford having the lion’s share of possession without doing too much with it.

Spurs were offering very little going forward themselves, but worked a promising opening when Richarlison picked out Archie Gray, whose header was blocked by Nathan Collins before Richarlison fired the loose ball wide.

Schade had another opening late in the half at the end of a swift Brentford break, but couldn’t direct a shot on goal. Jordan Henderson then played the ball back into the box, but Igor Thiago failed to make a decent connection with the cross with Keane Lewis-Potter waiting to pounce in a more promising position.

There were signs that this tepid contest was starting to spring into life after the break, as Mohammed Kudus’ looping left-footed shot sailed over the bar, while Lewis-Potter scuffed his close-range effort after being teed up by Yehor Yarmolyuk.

The Bees were enjoying a positive spell in the match when Guglielmo Vicario parried away Vitaly Janelt’s header from Henderson’s cross, before Thiago fired over from Michael Kayode’s delivery.

Ultimately, there was nothing to separate these sides in a contest which will be quickly forgotten for the lack of entertainment on offer in west London. Brentford move up to ninth with this hard-fought point, and continue to be a very tough nut to crack on their home turf.

Meanwhile, Tottenham leapfrog Newcastle United into 12th in what has been a disappointing domestic campaign to date, but Frank will be pleased to see his side keep consecutive PL clean sheets for the first time since August.
