Emile Heskey spoke about finding his ideal position on the pitch. “I never really thought about which position I would play. I just wanted to get the ball, run with it, and score goals. I always loved running with the ball and putting it in the net. I actually started out as a defender, but I kept taking the ball and charging forward, so eventually they moved me up front. I’d say I was reliable—my teammates knew I’d do my job. I kept things simple: I had an opponent in front of me, and my job was to beat him,” said the former England international.
He also recalled his transfer to the Reds. “Liverpool had been watching me since I was eighteen, but I didn’t join until I was twenty-two. By then, I was already in the national team and knew some of the players, so settling in was easier. But nothing is ever easy in football—you always have to keep pushing yourself and believe in what you bring to the team. As a kid, I was a Liverpool fan and always dreamed of playing for them. My idol was John Barnes. I watched him at the biggest tournaments and wanted to be just like him. So when I finally put on that red shirt, it was a dream come true.”
