Impressive performances from African players played a pivotal role in securing crucial results for their respective clubs.

England

Beto and Mohamed Salah were once again central figures in a dramatic Merseyside derby as Liverpool edged Everton 2-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In the thrilling encounter, it was the Egypt international who put the Reds ahead after 29 minutes, finishing first time from Cody Gakpo’s superb assist.

With that, Salah equalled Steven Gerrard’s derby scoring record with his ninth goal against the Toffees.

Six minutes before the hour mark, Beto levelled matters by sliding home Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s cross for his eighth Premier League goal of the season.

The Guinea-Bissau star now boasts eight goals in the English top flight this season. Also, he has now scored in his last three games in the competition (four goals in total), having had no longer streak since a run of four games from 1st February 2025 to 22nd February 2025.

The match swung back and forth, but Virgil van Dijk ultimately settled it in stoppage time, heading in a late corner to secure a 2-1 win for Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

Spain

Ademola Lookman was on song for Atletico Madrid in their Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad at Estadio de La Cartuja.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s White and Blues had taken a shock lead after 14 seconds through Ander Barrenetxea’s looping header, but Diego Simeone’s side gradually responded.

It was Lookman who cancelled out the opener 18 minutes later, finding space inside the box despite heavy pressure from three defenders and calmly drilling a low finish into the bottom corner.

The game remained open and tense, with Mikel Oyarzabal restoring Sociedad’s lead before half-time. Atletico continued to rely on the Nigerian’s movement and attacking threat after the break, with the match swinging end to end.

Despite late chances, including a missed sitter from Alex Baena, Atletico fell short as Sociedad held their nerve to win the shootout and claim the trophy.

Italy

Nigeria prospect Jeff Ekhator delivered a decisive moment as Genoa fought back to secure a crucial 2-1 comeback win away to Pisa.

The hosts struck first through Simone Canestrelli’s powerful header from Samuele Angori’s corner with VAR dismissing appeals for a foul. They almost doubled their lead on the counter, but Angori wasted a clear one-on-one.

The visitors responded before half-time when Ekhator levelled matters. After a sharp interplay involving Lorenzo Colombo and Tommaso Baldanzi, the teenager unleashed a stunning left-footed strike into the roof of the net.

After the break, Genoa grew stronger and took the lead in the 55th minute courtesy of Colombo’s penalty and held on to secure all points, which edged them away from the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, M’Bala Nzola was the hero for Sassuolo as they secured a first-ever home win over Como, edging a 2-1 victory that handed Cesc Fabregas’ side back-to-back defeats for the first time since December.

The visitors dominated possession early, probing for openings, but Sassuolo stayed compact and patient under pressure.

That paid off just before half-time when Nzola dropped deep and released Cristian Volpato with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing the forward to finish over Jean Butez.

Moments later, the Angola international turned goal scorer, reacting quickest inside the box to slot home his first goal since November and double the lead.

Como responded late in the half through Nico Paz’s looping header, setting up a tense second period, but Sassuolo held firm. Thanks to the result, the Neroverdi climbed into the top half of Serie A.

Germany

Nicolas Jackson scored as Bayern Munich powered to a 4-2 comeback win over VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena to seal the 2025/26 Bundesliga title.

The visitors struck first through Chris Fuhrich after 20 minutes, but the Bavarians levelled the scores through Raphael Guerreiro in the 32nd minute before Jackson added the second a minute later from close range.

Alphonso Davies added a deflected third in the goal-laden first half. England captain Harry Kane came off the bench to add a fourth shortly after the break to effectively secure the title.

Although Stuttgart added a second through Chema Andres, it could not hinder Vincent Kompany’s men from cruising home to victory in the six-goal thriller.

In another German top-flight fixture, Serhou Guirassy scored a late equaliser, but it was not enough as Hoffenheim stunned Borussia Dortmund 2-1, with Andrej Kramaric netting twice from the spot.

The hosts started brightly before Kramaric converted a 42nd-minute penalty after a handball by Niklas Sule. Dortmund struggled for rhythm despite improved intent after the break, even after Guirassy was introduced to lead the attack.

The Guinean made the difference in the 87th minute, turning sharply on the edge of the box before firing a powerful low finish into the corner to level the match.

However, deep into stoppage time, another handball allowed Kramaric to step up again and calmly seal victory in the 98th minute.

France

Mostafa Mohamed gave Nantes early hope with a superb strike, but the Canaries were denied victory as Brest snatched a late equaliser in a dramatic 1-1 draw.

The Egyptian forward struck in the 10th minute after sharp pressing from Francis Coquelin, cutting inside and bending a fine effort into the far corner.

After the break, they pushed for a second, but the game turned when Dehmaine Tabibou was sent off in the 65th minute, leaving them to battle with 10 men.

In stoppage time, Brendan Chardonnet rose from a set piece to head home, crushing the Canaries' hopes of securing all three points.
