Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos admits his side have a tough pool at the 2026 World Cup but is hopeful they can at least be among the best third-placed sides to advance to the Round of 32.

South Africa have drawn co-hosts Mexico, who they will play in the opening game of the tournament for the second time after they were on home soil in 2010, South Korea and a European qualifier, which Broos expects to be Denmark.

"It’s not an easy one,” the coach said from Washington. “First of all, we play the opening game of the tournament against Mexico in what will basically be a home match for them, so that will be very tough.

“Then we have South Korea. From that point, I was satisfied with Mexico and South Korea, but I had hoped the last team would be different from what we have now.

"With Denmark (likely) coming in, we have two very big teams in Mexico and Denmark. It will be difficult for us to finish first or second, but with the new World Cup format the best eight third-placed teams can also go through.

“So we have to focus on that, and maybe we can be one of those."

Broos believes getting something out of their clash with Mexico will be important, or they will be on the back foot immediately.

"If you lose the first one, then already the second game becomes one you have to win,” he said. “It’s not easy, but it will be a very good experience for our team. We need to play against teams like this. We will learn a lot, certainly.

“And in football, everything is possible. We will go for it. Like we have done in the last two years, we will fight for it and we will see."

Broos admits the opener against Mexico will be an incredible occasion, no matter the result, and that his players should fired up for it.

"In one way, you can be happy to play the first game against the home team,” he said. “As a player, these are the matches you dream of. You play in a stadium of 80,000 crazy people, the atmosphere will be fantastic.

“We have nothing to lose, nobody will expect South Africa to beat Mexico. So it’s a fantastic scenario for us. We have to enjoy it, and many times when you enjoy something, you can achieve something. So let’s do it."
