The 28-year-old Deijl already confirmed his January transfer after Go Ahead Eagles lost 3-1 to OGC Nice in the UEFA Europa League last Thursday. "I've played my last game for the club. It only needs my signature, but if the team bus makes it to the hotel, I'm a Feyenoord player," Deijl told Ziggo Sport in a post-match interview.
On Sunday, Feyenoord confirmed that Deijl had put pen to paper on a 2.5-year deal.
"This is a step that I dreamed of as a young boy, so the decision was made very quickly when Feyenoord approached me," said Deijl, who grew up just 20 minutes from De Kuip in the neighbouring town of Vlaardingen.
Mats Deijl joined Go Ahead Eagles in 2021 on a free transfer from FC Den Bosch. Since joining the Eagles, the club has grown to become a stable top-half team and celebrated the biggest moment in club history when Go Ahead Eagles won the Dutch Cup in 2025. Deijl had a big part in winning the final in De Kuip by scoring the equalising penalty in injury time.
Deijl is in line to make his Feyenoord debut on Sunday, when Robin van Persie's team faces Heracles Almelo in Rotterdam. Feyenoord are down a few hands on defence, with right-backs Givairo Read and Bart Nieuwkoop both out with injuries, leaving Jordan Lotomba as Van Persie's only option.
"It's just a matter of pushing on, but now in De Kuip. Wonderful! I've been able to experience being on this pitch a number of times, but not yet in a Feyenoord shirt. I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait," Deijl concluded.
