Lech Poznan emerged as comfortable 2-0 winners against 10-man KuPS Kuopio in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) knockout stage play-off, with the Railwaymen securing their third consecutive victory along with their third consecutive clean sheets, on a night when the Finnish champions rarely threatened.

After a somewhat rocky start to the tournament Lech Poznan have gone unbeaten in their last three UECL league matches and finished the league phase as the tournament’s third-highest scorers with 12 goals.

They quickly added to this total, taking the lead after nine minutes when Antoni Kozubal scored from close range following a corner.

The Yellow-Blacks evening got even worse three minutes later when Joslyn Luyeye-Lutumba received a straight red card for violent conduct following a foul on Kozubal, reducing the team to 10 men.

The reigning Polish champions threatened throughout the first half, with both Filip Jagiello and Mikael Ishak seeing header’s saved in the bottom-right corner by Johannes Kreidl.

The second goal came for the visitors four minutes before the break through Taofeek Ismaheel after the winger fired a precise strike across goal and into the far-left side of the goal.

Poznan didn’t let up after the break either as they continued to probe at the KuPS defence in search of a third. The first big opportunity of the second half came 15 minutes after the restart, with Gisli Thordarsson’s effort from inside the six-yard box being saved brilliantly by Kreidl in the bottom-left corner.

The away side remained in control for the majority of the second half, but very much looked to be comfortable with their two-goal advantage. However, they still continued to threaten and Kreidl was called into action once again in the 81st minute.

This time clawing Patrik Walemark’s freekick away from the top-left corner, ensuring that KuPS will head to Poland next week with a slither of hope of a comeback after a dismal showing at the Tammelan stadion.
