The UEFA Champions League's Round of 16 is now behind us and so it's time to present our team of the phase, with the standout performers unsurprisingly coming from among the winning sides across the continent.

Using Flashscore's player ratings, we have compiled the best XI players from across both legs of the round, in a 3-4-3 formation.

The lineup only includes players who played in both legs, with three from Barcelona, two from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, and most strikingly four players from Spain.

Goalkeeper

Alisson (Liverpool) 8.5

Alisson's performance in the first leg in Paris will long be remembered, but fortunately for PSG fans it was of little use as Liverpool were then eliminated in the return match as the Brazilian goalkeeper did not save any penalties in the deciding shootout.

Despite that loss, Alisson still averages the highest rating of any goalkeeper across the round.

Defenders

Alejandro Balde (Barcelona) 8.1

Barcelona's young left-back Alejandro Balde notched the winning assist - and his third in the tournament - as the Catalans downed Benfica to go through.

Balde teed up the third goal scored by Raphinha, more on him below.

Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) 7.8

The hero of the tie against Celtic, Alphonso Davies took a liking to the limelight and netted again in the return match against Bayer Leverkusen, making the score 2-0, and 5-0 across the tie, as Bayern breezed into the quarter-finals.

Nuno Mendes (PSG) 7.7

Portuguese full-back Nuno Mendes confirmed himself as one of the best performers in his role around against Liverpool.

His 73 minutes in the first leg were impressive but his 120 in the return, in which he coped well with the Reds' offensive threats, made people stand up and notice.

Midfielders

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) 8.4

Lamine Yamal's telepathic connection with teammate Raphina paid off again for Barcelona.

In their return match against Benfica, the 17-year-old scored and then assisted the Brazilian in the first half of the game as Barcelona sparkled.

Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter Milan) 8.8

In Rotterdam against Feyenoord, Inter star Hakan Calhanoglu only played 10 minutes, but in the return leg he started and played a masterful game.

He capped off his performance with the winning goal from the spot as Inter cruised through.

Declan Rice (Arsenal) 7.9

Arsenal's Declan Rice isn't always a headline-grabber but against PSV he dished out an assist in the first leg and then scored in the return as the Gunners battered their opposition 9-3 on aggregate.

It was not a bad return from Rice considering his low goalscoring averages.

Marco Asensio (Aston Villa) 8.5

On-loan Spaniard Marco Asensio was instrumental in both the first leg and the return for Aston Villa against Club Brugge, but especially in Birmingham.

Having come on after half-time, the PSG loanee scored twice in the space of a quarter of an hour to set up his side's win.

Forwards

Mikel Merino (Arsenal) 8.0

Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino, employed as a nine against PSV given the shortage of strikers at Mikel Arteta's disposal, performed his role admirably. He picked up a goal and an assist in their massive 7-1 first-leg win.

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) 8.1

English superstar forward Harry Kane is inevitable in Europe. With the goals he scored for Bayern across the first and second legs, he has now reached 39 goals in Europe's top competition in his career.

Inter will have to find a way to silence him in the quarter-finals, that's for sure.

Raphinha (Barcelona) 8.3

With the goals he scored against Benfica over both legs, Barcelona's Raphinha became the competition's top scorer alongside Kane with 11.

It's been an exceptional season for the Brazilian already and Hansi Flick's side will fancy their chances of making the final with him in red-hot form.
