By the standards of some years, it has been a relatively quiet January transfer window, but there have been some major moves completed as teams build their squads for the second half of the campaign.

Here is a look at the major transfers so far, with league action resuming this week.

Mpho Chabatsane

The left-back/centre-back arrives at Orlando Pirates from Marumo Gallants, perhaps as a replacement in the squad for Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who has departed for Chicago Fire. He is just 23 and did not get all that much game-time at Gallants, so may be one for the future.

Andre De Jong

The New Zealand international forward has made the switch from Stellenbosch FC to Orlando Pirates, moving from the quiet of the Cape Winelands to the bright lights of Johannesburg. A talented player, he can certainly add to the attacking threat of the Buccaneers.

Tidiane Diomandé

Sekhukhune United have signed right winger Diomandé from Stade d’Abidjan in Ivory Coast to add some width to their attack. He has CAF Champions League experience with his former club and helped them to the domestic league title last season.

Kobamelo Kodisang

Kodisang has moved to Stellenbosch FC on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns for the rest of the season after spending the first six months of the campaign in Portugal at AVS. It did not work out there and after two starts and three sub appearances, he was sent back to Chloorkop. He will try again at Stellenbosch

Sinoxolo Kwayiba

Kwayiba has returned to Chippa United from Orlando Pirates on a permanent deal as they try to avoid a relegation scrap this season. He moved in the opposite direction at the start of the campaign, but it did not work out for him in Gauteng.

Brayan Leon

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to South America to sign Colombian forward Leon from Independiente Medellín in a deal reportedly worth around $3.2 million (R52 million). He scored on debut after coming off the bench in Monday’s 2-0 win over Orbit College.

Gustavo Lopes

AmaZulu have signed the Brazilian defensive midfielder, who arrives from Mozambican side Clube Ferroviário da Beira. The 25-year-old had spent his entire career before that back home in Brazil in the lower leagues.

Tshegofatso Mabasa

The striker has moved from Orlando Pirates to Stellenbosch FC on loan for the remainder of the season, having lost his way somewhat at the Buccaneers. He will hope to score the goals that bring him back into Bafana Bafana contention ahead of the 2026 World Cup, though national team coach Hugo Broos does not appear to rate him.

Joel Madondo

The Uganda international forward, previously on the books of Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, has signed with Richards Bay. He arrives from Eswatini champions Nsingizini Hotspurs after successful trials.

Lehlohonolo Mojela

Mojela had been seeking an exit from Stellenbosch FC for some time and finally got it in this window as he made the switch to Sekhukhune United. A player plagued by injuries in recent seasons, he is a deadly forward when in form.

Daniel Msendami

The Zimbabwe international winger has moved from Marumo Gallants to Orlando Pirates fresh from playing at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 25-year-old operates predominantly on the right wing but can also play on the left. He scored for Gallants in their win over Pirates earlier this season.

Khulumani Ndamane

The departure of stalwart Mosa Lebusa as a free agent opened up a gap at centre-back for Mamelodi Sundowns, especially with the long-term injury to Mothobi Mvala. Sundowns have stepped in to sign Bafana Bafana international Ndamane from TS Galaxy. The 21-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs junior has a huge future.

Romaric Dognimin Ouattara

The Ivorian striker has joined Marumo Gallants from Olympique Akbou in Algeria, having previously played for MC Alger and Stade d’Abidjan in his homeland, where he was coached by current Gallants tactician Alexandre Lafitte.

Lebogang Phiri

Phiri returns to South African shores after 13 years in Europe and will play in the PSL for the first time with Sekhukhune United. When he left BidVest Wits for Danish side Brøndby, he did so without making a first-team appearance for the Clever Boys.

Monnapule Saleng

Winger Saleng made a surprise switch from Orlando Pirates to Mamelodi Sundowns after spending the first half of the season on loan at Orbit College. It has since emerged that he has an injury that will keep him sidelined for at least two months, though the Brazilians were aware of this when they signed him.

Luyolo Slatsha

The 23-year-old midfielder has signed with AmaZulu after an idle six months at second-tier Cape Town City. He had been seeking an exit following the club’s relegation and has now found a new home in Durban.
