Orlando Pirates have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Major Soccer League side Chicago Fire for the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

The 20-year-old centre-back completed a medical and has finalized terms with the MLS club, paving the way for his move to the United States.

He will, however, remain available for Saturday’s Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants, which will be his last game in a Pirates shirt.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire for the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi,” the Soweto giants said in a statement.

“Following positive discussions between the management of both clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025.”

Chicago Fire also confirmed the move and said Mbokazi will “occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position, and his contract will run through 2029, with a Club option for the 2029/30 season.”

He will link up with his new club after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with the final set for 18 January.

“We are excited to welcome Mbekezeli to the Club as we further strengthen our back line,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter.

“In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future.”

Mbokazi has seen a rapid rise in his career, having only made his Pirates debut in March, and won his first Bafana Bafana cap in June.

But he is now a fixture in the national team and will be a key player in Morocco, with his strength and speed, and an eye for goal that has seen him score some spectaular strikes.

He is predicted to be the next big thing in South African football and how he settled in the United States will be key to his future.
