Mamelodi Sundowns have condemned the behaviour of supporters who threw liquid over sporting director Flemming Berg and threatened coach Miguel Cardoso after last Friday’s home draw against Al Hilal in the African Champions League.

The incidents outside Loftus Versfeld were in the wake of frustration from fans after Sundowns were held to a 2-2 draw in their group game by the Sudanese club.

Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” a statement issued on Tuesday said.

“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.

“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches. Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns Supporters.

“The Players and Technical Team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the League Title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters,” the statement added.

Strangely, it has taken Sundowns four days to react to the incidents.

Berg and Cardoso have been the subject of previous fans’ dissatisfaction with banners calling for their dismissal displayed at Atteridgeville when the club played there earlier in the season.

Sundowns are back in action on Tuesday when they face Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership. They will then travel to neutral Rwanda to meet Al Hilal again in the Champions League on Friday.
