Here is a quick round-up of the matches on Wednesday.
Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Sekhukhune United
Luke Baartman continued his fine start to the season with the opening goal as Kaizer Chiefs maintained their 100% start to the Betway Premiership campaign with a 2-0 home success over Sekhukhune United.
It was a lovely, composed finish too, as he met a low cross from Dillan Solomons first time and fired past Toaster Nsabata in the Sekhukhune United goal.
It is a first goal in a Chiefs shirt for the 20-year-old and his first in the South African top flight since he netted for Cape Town Spurs in a 1-1 draw with AmaZulu in December 2023.
It was also a first league assist for Solomons in more than a year after he did not manage a single one last season.
Chiefs doubled their advantage when Siphesihle Ndlovu’s brilliant through-ball was perfect for Mdu Shabalala to run onto and score.
It is a start to the league season that mirrors the last campaign for Chiefs, when they took 13 points from the first 15 available before a 1-0 loss to, ironically, Sekhukhune. That was their only defeat in their first 15 league games (W8 D6), a run that had them well in the title race in the first half of the season before they fell away.
Sekhukhune had started the campaign with two wins, one in the league and the other in the MTN8.
Tshepang Moremi scored against his old team to give Orlando Pirates an early lead against AmaZulu, but they were pegged back to 1-1 and had to share the spoils.
Moremi profited as Usuthu’s new Ivorian goalkeeper Faveur Kouassi parried the ball into his path when he might have been stronger in clearing it. The Bafana Bafana winger turned the ball in off the post.
It is a second goal in as many league games for Moremi, who netted five times in the league last season but already has two this campaign.
AmaZulu levelled from the penalty spot when their Zimbabwean forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continued his excellent start to the campaign with a fourth goal in three league and cup matches.
Pirates could have few complaints about the spot-kick as Mondli Mbanjwa got goal-side of Kamogelo Sebelebele on the left and the latter brought him down from behind.
Promoted Milford picked up their first three points as a top-flight side with a 1-0 win over Siwelele in Richards Bay.
It will be a relief for coach Xanti Pupuma, who was pleased with his side’s display in their opening loss to Pirates but would have been keen to break their duck in the wins column.
The only goal of the game was scored by Menzi Chilli in the 77th minute, a 34-year-old player who had spent his entire professional career in the second tier before this season.
It has taken him just two games to open his account in the big time.
Durban City 0-0 Lamontville Golden Arrows
The match between Durban City and Lamontville Golden Arrows kicked off late due to a waterlogged pitch and it was a hard slog for fans as the game ended goalless.
City were the better team on the night and had the lion’s share of chances, but could not convert with an xG of 1.15.
Golden Arrows have looked a little goal-shy so far this campaign despite their 1-0 win over Chiefs in the MTN8 on Sunday, when an owngoal from AmaKhosi keeper Petersen gave them victory.
But both of these sides look like they will struggle in front of goal this season.
