After failing to win any of their three group stage matches at AFCON in 2023 (D2, L1), Tunisia came into this game fired up and ready to avoid a similar outcome this time around.
They got off to a perfect start, taking the lead after 10 minutes when Hannibal Mejbri’s corner was powered goalwards by Ellyes Skhiri with a header that hit the inside of the post before deflecting off Aziz Kayondo, who was standing on the goalline.
Following their fast start, the Carthage Eagles continued to dominate, but they weren’t creating many clear-cut chances until the 40th minute, when they doubled their lead through Achouri, who steered a first-time volley into the top-right corner to finish off a swift move.
The start of the second half was much quieter, with neither side offering much of a threat in the 15 minutes following half time.
However, Tunisia sprang back into life after 64’, as Abdi’s effort was palmed away by Jamal Salim, but only as far as Achouri, who was on hand to tap the rebound into the empty net for his second.
At this stage, there was little hope of a Uganda comeback, with the closest they came to pulling a goal back being an ambitious Denis Omedi long shot that flew just past the left post.

Despite a stoppage-time consolation courtesy of a heavily deflected Omedi strike, the result was never in doubt as Tunisia secured three points to lift them to the top of Group C on GD.
Meanwhile, Uganda sit bottom after a rather disappointing start to their AFCON campaign, having failed to find the net for just the third time in 11 internationals.
