Cameroon are a side that hold a special place in the history of Bafana Bafana as the very first team they faced after readmission to international football in 1992, and the two nations will clash again in the Round of 16 in Rabat on Sunday at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana have only ever lost once to the Indomitable Lions, and never in competitive football, with that solitary defeat coming some 33 years ago in Cape Town.

The teams have met on nine previous occasions, with Bafana victorious in three of those and five ending in draws, including the last three encounters.

They have not met since a pair of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in 2016, when current Bafana coach Hugo Broos was in charge of Cameroon, just months before he led them to continental glory the following year.

Here is a quick look back at their previous nine meetings.

South Africa 1–0 Cameroon

07/07/92 – Friendly international, Durban

When it became clear South Africa would be readmitted to international football in 1992, a hastily arranged series of three matches was organised against Cameroon, who had been African heroes at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, reaching the quarter-finals.

The first game was played on a rainy night in Durban and looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw before a generous penalty award for Bafana allowed Doctor Khumalo to score their first-ever international goal in the 82nd minute and make history. Perhaps Botswana referee Jelas Masole had a sense of occasion as Bafana beat a strong Cameroon team that included talisman Roger Milla.

South Africa 1–2 Cameroon

09/07/92 – Friendly international, Cape Town

The teams met again two days later at the Goodwood Showgrounds, now a sprawling casino and hotel complex, and two goals from Jacob Ewane won the day for Cameroon.

Bafana had taken the lead after Jules Onana put the ball into his own net in the eighth minute, but the visitors were level just a minute later as Ewane scored his first, before netting the winner just before the final whistle. This was despite Cameroon playing with nine men from the hour mark after red cards for Onana and Jean-Claude Pagal.

South Africa 2–2 Cameroon

11/07/92 – Friendly international, Johannesburg

A third game in five days on the whistlestop tour ended all square as Cameroon twice led. Pagal, who had received a red card two days earlier, netted the opener in the sixth minute, but Phil Masinga equalised for Bafana.

The tourists were back in front when Ewane scored his third of the series, only for Bennett Masinga, cousin of Phil, to equalise once more. Sadly, both Masingas passed away in their 40s after illness.

South Africa 1–1 Cameroon

03/12/94 – Four Nations Cup, Johannesburg

The teams clashed again two years later in the Four Nations Cup, with Emmanuel Maboang giving Cameroon the lead at Ellis Park, only for Edward Motale to equalise with a rare international goal for the defender. Khumalo was sent off in this match just before the hour mark.

South Africa 3–0 Cameroon

13/01/96 – Africa Cup of Nations, Johannesburg

Perhaps their most famous meeting came in the opening game of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, when Bafana set the tone for what would ultimately be a run to the title. Phil Masinga, Mark Williams and John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu scored in a scintillating performance at Soccer City. This remains the teams’ only meeting at the Cup of Nations finals.

South Africa 3–2 Cameroon

19/11/08 – Friendly international, Rustenburg

It would be 12 years before the teams met again, this time in a friendly as they built towards the 2010 World Cup. Two early goals from Teko Modise had Bafana 2-0 up before Daniel N’Gom Kome and Somen Tchoyi pulled the visitors level. However, Bernard Parker found a winner for the home side eight minutes from time.

South Africa 1–1 Cameroon

10/01/15 – Friendly international, Libreville

The first time the teams clashed outside South Africa, this was a warm-up match ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Vincent Aboubakar put Cameroon ahead early on, but Sibusiso Vilakazi equalised for Bafana in the second half.

Cameroon 2–2 South Africa

26/03/16 – Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Limbe

An Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Broos in charge of Cameroon saw Bafana twice take the lead but fail to secure victory. Tokelo Rantie put them ahead in the 17th minute, but Sébastien Siani equalised for the Indomitable Lions. Hlompho Kekana then netted a superb goal from all of 60 yards after catching the goalkeeper off his line, only for Nicolas Nkoulou to equalise again for the hosts. This remains the only meeting between the teams in Cameroon.

South Africa 0–0 Cameroon

29/03/16 – Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Durban

The return fixture came just three days later in Durban as the teams played out a tepid 0-0 draw, with Broos setting up one of the defensive displays he is famous for. This was the last meeting between the sides, and Broos will now be in the opposite dugout when they clash again on Sunday.
