“It’s unbelievable,” Valgren said after celebrating with his teammates at the finish line. “We all worked so hard for this. I had a really good winter at home with all my family, and they supported the team, and I supported them. We just had a baby one month ago, so it’s for them, it’s for the team. For me, I’m speechless.”
Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took second spot, with Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) finishing third. Race leader, Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), finished 19 seconds behind Del Toro, and as a consequence was forced to hand over the blue jersey. He is now 23 seconds behind the Mexican overall.
It has been a struggle to return to the prime of the WorldTour for the charismatic Danes after he crashed heavily at the Route d’Occitanie, where he sustained a list of horrendous injuries, including a fractured pelvis, dislocated hip, damage to his ACL and MCL ligaments in his knee, as well as a shattered meniscus.
