Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon became the first player in the league to reach 40 goals this season in his team's shutout win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday!

Avalanche 5-0 Red Wings

MacKinnon's 40th goal of the season came during the second period that put the Avs up 4-0. He had also recorded his 51st assist on the team's first goal of the game from Brent Burns (9). This now marks the fourth time in his career MacKinnon has reached at least 40 goals, now the third time in the past four seasons.

The Canadian superstar sits just three points below Connor McDavid (94) for the most in the NHL.

Colorado goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood recorded his third shutout of the season, and 17th of his career, after denying Red Wings players 28 times. The Avs improved to a league-best 36-8-9.

Detroit fell to 32-18-6.

Capitals 4-3 Hurricanes

After going down 3-0, the Capitals scored three unanswered goals, two in the second period to tie it up, to send it to overtime, where rookie Justin Sourdif (12) sent home the game-winner.

Capitals goaltender Clay Stevenson played in just his second career game, earning his first win after denying the Canes 19 times to extend Washington's point streak to seven games.

The Caps improved to 27-22-7. Carolina fell to 33-15-6.

Penguins 6-5 Rangers

The Penguins held off a third-period rally from the Rangers despite going up 5-1 with 19 minutes to go in the final frame.

New York scored four of the game's remaining five goals, but an empty-netter from Ben Kindel (12) gave the Penguins just enough insurance to secure their sixth-straight win.

Noel Acciari and Anthony Mantha both had two goals for the Penguins, while Alexis Lafreniere (12) had two for the Rangers.

Pittsburgh improved to 28-14-11, while the Rangers dropped their third straight. They now sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 22-28-6 record.

Kings 3-2 Flyers

Adrian Kempe (20) scored both of the Kings' goals in regulation, both assisted by Corey Perry, before the Flyers rallied back with a goal in the second from Trevor Zegras (20) and one in the third from Travis Konecny (22), who assisted on Zegras' goal, to send it to overtime.

Los Angeles' Quinton Byfield would prove clutch after scoring his 10th goal of the season, also assisted by Kempe, to give the Kings the win as they improved to 23-17-13.

Konecny now has five goals in the Flyers' past five games, but they drop their fourth-straight and have now loss five of their last six, falling to 24-20-10 on the year.

Flames 3-2 Sharks

After Calgary's Matvei Gridin tied it up 2-2 in the second period with his second goal of the season, Joel Farabee (11) scored a short-handed goal that eventually ended the Flames' six-game losing streak.

San Jose goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made 39 saves despite the loss, marking a season-high for the 30-year-old.

The Flames improved to 22-26-5, while the Sharks fell to 27-22-4.

Jets 2-1 Panthers

Eetu Luostarinen (6) scored the only goal of the first two periods to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

But a pair of goals from Winnipeg's Cole Perfetti (5) and Mark Scheifele (27) in the third period force the Panthers to lose their third-straight game.

Winnipeg improved to 22-25-7, while the Panthers dropped to 28-23-3.

Blue Jackets 5-3 Blues

The Blue Jackets extended their win streak - a season best - after Damon Severson (4) and Mason Marchment (13) broke the 3-3 tie.

Marchment recently became one of the 31 players in the month of January to contribute to the NHL record combined hat tricks in a single month, with his goal in this game being his first since the hatty.

Columbus sits at 27-20-7 on the season and sit behind the Boston Bruins for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Blues fell to 20-26-9.

Predators 4-3 Islanders

With just 1:14 left in the game, defenceman Roman Josi scored his 10th goal of the season and the 200th of his career to give the Predators the last-minute win, effectively ending their three-game skid.

Teammate Filip Forsberg scored twice to up his season total to 22, marking his second multi-score game of the season - his first being a hat trick against the St. Louis Blues on December 15th.

Nashville improved to 25-23-6, while the Islanders fell to 30-20-5.

Canadiens 4-2 Sabres

After heading into the third period down 2-1, Montreal's Cole Caufield continued to rake after scoring back-to-back goals, bringing his season total up to 32.

This was Caufield's eighth multi-goal game of the season as he now has eight points in the last five games. He needs six more goals to surpass his career-high of 37 that he set last season.

Montreal extended their win streak to three games as they improved to 31-17-7. Buffalo saw their five-game win streak come to an end as they fell to 31-18-5.

Senators 4-1 Devils

Heading into the third frame tied up 1-1, the Sens broke open the gates and scored three-straight goals to win their third straight game.

Team captain Brady Tkachuk led the way for the Senators with three points (one goal, two assists), while Tim Stutzle was right behind him with two points (one goal, one assist).

New Jersey has now lost three of their last four and fell to 28-25-2 on the season, while the Sens improved to 26-21-7.

Maple Leafs 3-2 Canucks

After going down 2-1, the Maple Leafs put up a whopping 18 shots on goal in the third period, with Max Domi (9) getting on by to send it to overtime tied up 2-2.

After a scoreless OT, Auston Matthews and William Nylander would both score during the shootout to end the Leafs' six-game skid.

They improved to 25-21-9, while the NHL's worst team in the Canucks fell to 18-31-6. They are the only team in the league without at least 20 wins.

Stars 3-2 Mammoth

Utah's Kailer Yamamoto (9) scored both of the team's goals as the Stars held them to just 14 total shots on goal the entire game, never allowing the Mammoth to record more than five in a period.

Wyatt Johnston (29), Thomas Harley (4), and Matt Duchene (9) all scored for Dallas as they improved to 31-14-9.

Utah fell to 28-22-4, but they still hold the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
