The Washington Capitals outlasted the Montreal Canadiens in a back-and-forth battle, while the Dallas Stars bested the Colorado Avalanche in a shootout during Wednesday's two-game slate!

Capitals 5-4 Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens had a 2-1 lead as time was winding down in the first period. But Washington Capitals' Ivan Miroshnichenko scored his first goal of the season during the team's third power play of the night to tie it up 2-2 with less than 30 seconds left.

Washington's Alex Tuch broke the tie with a no-look, short-handed wrister that gave them a 3-2 lead six minutes into the second frame.

Six minutes later, Josh Anderson scored the equalizer for his second goal of the game, fourth of the season, to tie it up once more heading into the final period.

Justin Holl (2) and Tuch (5) added insurance just enough for the Caps to take home the win despite a late third-period goal from Montreal's Nick Suzuki (4).

Montreal outshot the Caps 29-24. They went 1-for-2 on their power plays, while the Caps went 1-for-4. Tuch led all players with three points (2G, 1A) as the Caps improved to 4-3. He is now tied with teammate Ryan Leonard for the most points (6) this season for the Caps.

The Habs fell to 3-3-1.

Stars 3-2 Avalanche

Despite a combined five penalties in the first, neither team capitalized on man-advantage opportunities and went into the second frame scoreless. It wasn't until Gabriel Landeskog broke the ice and scored his second of the season to put his Avalanche up 1-0.

They had an opportunity to go up 2-0 after eight minutes, but the goal was eventually called back for offsides after further review.

Almost 10 minutes later, Miro Heiskanen scored to tie things up for the Dallas Stars with his third of the season. Following a penalty-less second period, the Avalanche had a prime opportunity after Mikko Rantanen received a two-minute minor for tripping for the game's only power play in the third period.

But it was Dallas' Arttu Hyry who put his squad up 2-1 with a short-handed goal that also marked his first of the season.

Seven minutes later, Avs veteran Brock Nelson sent it into overtime with an equalizer. But it was Dallas' Roope Hintz who scored the shootout game-winner. It marked his first since February 25, 2023, against the Vegas Golden Knights. Ironically, that also ended in a 3-2 win.

Colorado outshot Dallas 27-22. Both teams combined for 0-for-6 on the power play (DAL - 0/2, COL - 0/4). The Stars improved to 3-3-1; Avs fell to 4-3.
