New Jersey Devils 6-4 Los Angeles Kings
A game with plenty of goals went the way of the New Jersey Devils, who topped the Los Angleles King 6-4 at home.
Nico Hischier led the scoring in this one, netting twice while providing two helpers for the Devils. Arseni Gritsyuk and Timo Meier each chipped in with a goal and an assist, which played a key role for New Jersey claiming the win.
The Kings, who went in front during the second period, saw goals from Anze Kopitar (2), Artemi Panarin, and Taylor Ward as Brandt Clark had three assists on the night. Unfortunately for them, it was not enough, with Jack Hughes scoring the winner with two and a half minutes left through a power play, before Meier added an empty netter.
The Devils are almost sure to miss out on the playoffs despite the win, as they sit 11 points back from eighth place. Their victory ended a two-game losing streak. As for the Kings, they drop out of the postseason places, remaining a point behind the San Jose Sharks.
Buffalo Sabres 3-2 Toronto Maple Leafs (SO)
The Buffalo Sabres required a shotout to get past the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 at home.
Owen Power got the hosts in front just two minutes in as they were looking to get back to winning ways immediately. However, the Leafs, playing without their captain for the rest of the season, responded through Dakota Joshua minutes later.
The Buds took an unexpected lead less than a minute after the first intermission when Max Domi finished off a pass from William Nylander. Jack Quinn had the answer for Buffalo, tying things up midway through the period.
Nothing was decided in the final frame, nor in overtime, meaning a shootout was required to determine a winner. Quinn and Alex Tuch converted their attempts to give the Sabres the win.
The Sabres are now just two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes for top spot in the East. They have won nine of their last 10. As for Toronto, it is the exact opposite, with the loss being their ninth from their last 10 games.
