Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 Anaheim Ducks
The Toronto Maple Leafs' dismal run is over, with their eight-game losing skid being snapped with a 6-4 defeat of the Anaheim Ducks at home.
Things were not looking promising for the home team after the Ducks took a 2-1 lead into intermission despite conceding first. Cutter Gauthier cancelled Matias Maccelli's opener before Ian Moore gave the guests their first lead of the night.
Pavel Mintyukov doubled Anaheim's lead almost three minutes after the restart as they had a two-goal cushion. That was when the Buds finally showed up, Auston Matthews and John Tavares netted to tie things up before the second intermission. Then, William Nylander gave Toronto their second lead of the night moments into the third.
They were not done there, as Benoit Groulx made it 5-3. Matthew Knies added a sixth via an empt netter to put the game beyond doubt. Alexander Killorn's marker with 26 seconds left proved to be a consolation for the Ducks.
The Leafs moved ahead of the Devils after claiming just their 20th regular time win of the year. Anaheim stays fourth in the Western Conference despite the loss, which was their second in their last three games.
Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 Detroit Red Wings
The Tampa Bay Lightning got back to winning ways by topping the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in an Atlantic Division showdown.
It took the Bolts until the second period before Jake Guentzel converted a power play 49 seconds in. That was the only goal of the first two periods as Tampa had the narrow advantage.
Gage Goncalves doubled the lead for the hosts 95 seconds into the third frame, before Detroit finally found the back of the net through J.T. Compher. That happened with 12:55 left in regulation, giving the Red Wings plenty of time to find a leveller.
Unfortunately for them, that second goal never came. Instead, Goncalves and Guentzel scored one more each to complete the victory for the Lightning.
Ending their two-game losing streak, Tampa are third in the East, two points behind their divisional leaders Buffalo Sabres. The Red Wings are seventh, falling for the fourth time in their last five.
