Montreal Canadiens 6-3 Vancouver Canucks
A three-goal haul in the third period lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-3 defeat of the Vancouver Canucks in Quebec.
Tied 3-3 after the first two periods, the Habs blew the game open thanks to goals from Michael Matheson, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Oliver Kapanen. The trio of markers came within the first 6:05. Noah Dobson and Alexandre Carrier were the other scorers for Montreal, who have now won six of their last eight.
The Canucks, who took the lead twice in the contest, could not find a response in the final frame in this one. Elias Pettersson had put them in front midway through the opening stanza, with Evander Kane and Max Sasson also getting on the scoresheet.
The win puts the Habs in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, two points back of the Carolina Hurricanes for top spot. As for the Canucks, their season continues to go from bad to worse, as they have the worst record in the league. Their defeat at the Bell Centre was their seventh successive loss.
Detroit Red Wings 4-3 Carolina Hurricanes
Andrew Copp's goal with 1:33 left in overtime saw the Detroit Red Wings survive a scare, beating the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 4-3.
The hosts went in front via James Van Riemsdyk in the opening period, before Alex DeBrincat and Albert Johansson made it 3-0 five minutes after the restart.
However, the Canes were not going to back down in this key Eastern Conference clash. Jackson Blake's power play marker got them on the board to start the third. Seth Jarvis made it a one-goal game moments later, before Shayne Gostisbehere tied things up with three minutes left in regulation.
Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, their comeback was ultimately just short, as Detroit claimed their winner thanks to Copp's eighth goal of the season.
The teams are tied at the top of the conference, though Carolina still hold onto first spot for now. Their four-game winning streak has been snapped, though the Red Wings have now prevailed in their last four themselves.
