With five new players making their debut, the Danish national handball team who recently won the European Championships put Norway to the sword in a 39-30 win in a Golden League friendly at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen on Thursday night.

The match demonstrated how wide a talent pool Danish men's handball has developed in recent years. And it showed once again that national coach Nikolaj Jacobsen has created a team where new faces have an amazing ease of fitting in.

Among the debutants, Victor Norlyk set the pace after 70 seconds by scoring his first international goal.

The 22-year-old Mors-Thy player, however, made himself particularly noticeable by sliding completely effortlessly into the back line with Mathias Gidsel and Thomas Arnoldsen.

Norlyk played instead of the injured Simon Pytlick, and it actually looked as if the unimpressed youngster gave the already fast Danish attacking game even more speed.

Both Danish shooters and Norwegian defenders were gasping for breath towards the end of the first 30 frantic minutes, in which Denmark scored 22 goals.

League goal scorer Frederik Bjerre did well on the left wing, and line player Steven Plucnar was solid in defense.

But the most spectacular entry was made by Christoffer Bonde. The Skjern goalkeeper was handed a chance to shine when Norway earned a penalty throw in the first half. Bonde made a double save, and went back to the bench.

Denmark led 22-12 at the interval, and from the start of the second half, Gidsel was joined by Mads Hoxer and Lasse Andersson at the backcourt.

It slowed down the pace a bit, but Denmark still had an easy time creating chances as long as their concentration was high enough.

In goal, Emil Nielsen blocked Norwegian shots with stoic calm. But Norwegian goalie Sander Sagosen did find space to score enough goals to make himself the all-time goal scorer for the Norwegian men's national team.

Towards the end, Nicolaj Jorgensen came on as the fifth debutant of the evening. But by then, the mistakes had started to appear, and it became difficult for the goalkeeper from Hamburg to really show his qualities.

This weekend, Denmark will play the last two games at the tournament. On Saturday, against the USA, while the Netherlands waits on Sunday.
