Real Sociedad moved up five places in the LaLiga table after their 2-1 win at Getafe’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez, a defeat for Los Azulones which extended their recent slump (D1, L5).

The match official wasn’t being taken in by any play-acting from both sides, in what was a disjointed and not at all exciting opening to the game, where Mauro Arambarri’s shot in the second minute – which didn’t come close to troubling La Real keeper Alex Remiro – was the only effort in the first 15 minutes.

Thanks in no small part to Takefusa Kubo’s trickery down the Sociedad right, the visitors began to exert more pressure on Getafe; however, the hosts always had an out ball in Mario Martin, and that kept the visitors on their toes.

Needless fouls ensured that the stop-start nature of the encounter continued, and despite the Basque side having 74% possession at the 30-minute mark, there was still precious little in the way of goalmouth action.

The silence at the Estadio Coliseum was deafening before, out of absolutely nowhere, Brais Mendez slammed home a superb curling left-foot half-volley from inside the D to give the visitors a scarcely-deserved lead.

n the final action of a frustrating first half, Remiro made a mess of a daisy cutter from Getafe’s Juan Iglesias and was relieved to see the ball go wide.

But that wouldn’t be a sign of things to come after half-time as neither side gained control after the break, and if there weren’t more needless free-kicks being given away, the offside flag would curtail any attacks.

Goncalo Guedes and Carlos Soler both miscued half-chances for La Real, whilst aimless balls forward from several Getafe players never came close to finding their intended recipients.

Just before the hour, a horrendous back pass let in Mikel Oyazarbal, but the Sociedad captain couldn’t beat a stranded David Soria.

The momentum remained with the Basques though, and Juanmi was a whisker away from getting a boot on an inviting cross soon after.

Luis Milla helped to push the hosts forward in the latter stages in search of the equaliser, and in the 90th minute, former Sociedad man Juanmi found the net with a volley after two flick-ons from a free-kick.

Incredibly though, Soria flapped at a corner in the sixth minute of time added on, and Jon Aramburu headed into an empty net.

The win for La Real continues their recent unbeaten run (W2, D2), and sees them leapfrog Getafe in the process, thanks to a better goal difference.
