Chicago Fire set their sights on signing Robert Lewandowski last year, and have been trying to convince him of the move so that he joins this month.

Sources have described to Flashscore how the Major League Soccer outfit began to seriously target the legendary Polish striker ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

And after announcing his departure from Barcelona in May, he is now looking for a new challenge and is tempted by a move to America.

He has been aware of the prospect and is checking out the city to help make his decision.

Ahead of their planned move to a state-of-the-art new stadium in 2028, Chicago Fire are seeking to boost fan interest and market visibility by building a winning team with recognisable stars.

The stadium will be known as McDonald's Park, and building work began in March.

It is anticipated that the next two years becomes a key time of growth for the club and they want Lewandowski to be a poster boy of their project.

It is believed Lewandowski is tempted by a move to Chicago, where he would ideally be expected to sign until 2029.

MLS currently has Lionel Messi at Inter Miami and Son Heung-min at Los Angeles FC as marquee names.

Lewandowski, 37, scored 14 goals in La Liga for Barcelona last season, and netted four times in 11 Champions League games and is deciding whether the move is right for him.

There should be clarity very soon on whether Lewandowski decides to push ahead with negotiations.

Sources say that Chicago Fire always anticipated that this summer period would be a time when they would try to get the striker on board.

The plan would be to sign him in the next month, so that he can join up with the team when the MLS season resumes after the World Cup.
