Jonas Vingegaard has pulled out of the European Road Cycling Championships taking place in Guilherand-Granges, France.

Jonas Vingegaard left the line race at the European Championships on Sunday with about 80 kilometers to go.

The Danish star, who was regarded as one of the favourites for the title, was dropped from the peloton with just over 105 kilometers left of the race and retired later when he was far behind the front group of riders.

Shaking his head, the Vuelta a España winner was forced to give up when riders passed the seven-kilometer climb Côte de Saint-Romain-de-Lerps for the second time.

The 28-year-old from Jutland rode for the first time for Denmark as a senior rider and, unlike many others in the peloton, he did not participate in the World Championships in Rwanda last week.

Instead, he took a race break at home in Glyngore for three weeks, and obviously it was far from optimal in relation to peaking at the European Championships.

With Vingegaard out, the Danes are probably racing wholeheartedly for Mattias Skjelmose, who finished fourth at the World Championships.
