Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen is through to the second round of the Super 750 tournament India Open.

Axelsen won his first match of the year against world No 31, Yu Jen Chi from Taiwan, who was defeated 16-21, 21-11, 21-13.

The Danish Olympic gold medalist began the new year by crashing out in the first round of the Super 1000 tournament in Malaysia on 7 January.

In the season opener, he lost to Lee Yiu Lee from Hong Kong but managed to wash away that stain in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Viktor Axelsen came under pressure in the first set, where Lee Yiu Lee looked sharper and won it by a comfortable margin of 21-16.

Axelsen then upped the pace enormously in the second set where Yu Jen Chi was left defenseless against the ruthless Dane who carried his momentum into the third set which he won 21-13 and booked his ticket for the next round.

Axelsens compatriot Rasmus Gemke also participated in the tournament, but was eliminated on Tuesday in the first round after losing to Chinese Lu Guangzu.

Gemke, ranked 30th in the world, lost 19-21, 21-16, 12-21 to Lu Guangzu, ranked 19th in the world.

Shortly after Axelsen's match on Wednesday, a purely Danish showdown was on the menu, when Mia Blichfeldt beat Julie Dawall Jakobsen over two sets.

Blichfeldt won quite comfortably by 21-9, 21-14 and is therefore ready for the round of 16 in India.

World No 1 mens doubles team, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup, also crashed out in the first round of the doubles tournament.

On Tuesday, the Danish duo lost to the two South Koreans Min Hyuk Kang and Yong Jin
