Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour got revenge for losing last year European championship title in badminton when she today claimed the trophy by defeating last year's Danish winner Line Kjaersfeldt 21-17, 21-15

There was no repeat of the result from last year's final in the women's singles at the European Championships in badminton on Sunday afternoon.

Line Kjærsfeldt seemed to have too much tension in her body to find her usual high level when she was defeated by Scottish Kirsty Gilmour on Sunday afternoon, 21-17, 21-15.

The two also met in the final last year when Kjaerfeldt won the title. The European Championship triumph was 32-year-old Gilmour's first in her career after losing five finals previously.

Kjaersfeldt otherwise got off to a good start and dictated most of the play as she was able to play at a higher pace than Gilmour, who, in turn, made fewer unforced errors.

The Dane picked up a lot of points by putting pressure on the Scotsman's backhand, but Gilmour gradually managed to limit the number of mistakes. As Kjaerfeldt could no longer count on Gilmour to make easy mistakes, it increased the pressure on the Dane to up her game, which resulted in Kjaerfeldt making more mistakes.

And from being ahead 13-10, she suddenly fell behind 16-19 as the set slipped away from her, and Gilmour just had to wait for Kjaersfeldt to make mistakes by playing patiently.

The trend continued in the second set. When Kjaersfeldt's legwork was there, she was able to move Gilmour around, but gradually, there was no more gas left in the Danish tank, and the number of unforced errors increased again.

From 11-11, the Scot took six successive points, and then the final was decided. Kjaersfeldt was broken and did not have the energy to try to find more solutions.
