The Colorado Avalanche acquired center Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade deal on Thursday.

In exchange, the Maple Leafs are receiving a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick and a 2027 conditional first-round pick.

Roy, 28, has five goals and 15 assists through 59 games this season, but has been having a rough go at it recently. He posted below a 7.0 in our ratings system in each of the last six games, putting up just one assist and zero goals in that time frame.

He's posted at least 13 goals and 13 assists in each of the past four seasons during his time with the Vegas Golden Knights. Roy was part of the blockbuster deal that sent Mitch Marner from the Leafs to Vegas, but he hasn't adjusted well since.

Toronto is currently on a downturn as they've now lost all five of their games since coming back from the Olympic break. They sit at 27-24-11 (65 points) and rank 13th out of 16 in the Eastern Conference.

Meanwhile, Roy will be joining the NHL's best team in the Colorado Avalanche, who boast a 41-10-9 record (91 points). They are the only team in the NHL right now with both 40+ wins and 90+ points.

They lost in the first round of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs after falling in seven games to the Dallas Stars. Now, they've dominated the NHL this year as they look to be prime favourites to win the Stanley Cup.
