18-year-old Brisbane Lions VFL product Koby Evans is being investigated by the AFL for an alleged homophobic slur during Saturday's VFL loss to Coburg at Coburg City Oval.

Coburg were unexpected and authoritative winners, defeating the Brisbane Lions Reserves team by 65 points to register just their second victory of the season and sending the Lions down to 21st on the ladder.

Evans has been accused of making a homophobic comment towards a Coburg opponent during the match which was reported to umpires following the conclusion of the game.

Brisbane Lions said in a statement that Evans "apologized multiple times – on field and again post-match".

“The player is extremely remorseful and takes full responsibility," they added.

The club is disappointed the incident has occurred while supporting and educating the player.

It was the second time in a week that Evans played against Coburg, having represented the Australia U18 Academy team against a Coburg rep side at Whitten Oval last Monday.

Evans appears set for a suspension of at least four matches according to the recent precedent set by the sanction handed down to St Kilda's Lance Collard for a similar incident earlier this year.

Collard was initially handed a nine-game ban, which was reduced to four thanks to a successful appeal by the St Kilda legal defence team.

The chair of the AFL Appeals Board, Will Houghton KC, was subsequently sacked by the AFL for his statement of reasoning including the inference that "racist, sexist or homophobic“ language on the field is "commonplace".

Despite their efforts to stamp out homophobic on-field conduct with heavy bans, the sport continues to be embarrassed by subsequent instances of further allegations.

Adelaide's Izak Rankine was banned from their finals campaign last year for a similar offence.
